just rely on software toggles, but offered physical reassurance.

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip: By putting the camera on a flip module, the screen was unblemished, and the camera was physically tucked away when not in use. Coupled with a RhinoShield privacy case that featured a sliding cover for the back camera, you had a device that was effectively blind to the outside world until you decided otherwise. It ran a near-Stock Android interface, minimizing the telemetry bloat out of the box. I’ve used this phone as my daily driver since 2021 until now.

The Lenovo Legion Pro: While marketed as a gaming phone, it featured a side-mounted pop-up camera (completely hidden by default compared to the Zenfone 8 Flip). Adding to that, its aggressive resource management - designed to prioritize gaming - had the side effect of ruthlessly killing background trackers and telemetry services. This was my second phone, that I kept exclusively for gaming, as many of them were a privacy nightmare that I didn’t want on my main phone while playing with my friends.

The Shift:
So, how did we get here? Why did manufacturers sacrifice mechanical parts like pop-up cameras? The “notch” and the “hole-punch” won, normalizing the idea that a camera should always be pointed at your face. Well, I don’t like it.

Victor Gîrbu is a reader-supported publication. The battlefield has moved entirely to software.

This is why my latest recommendation is the OnePlus 13 running LineageOS.

We can no longer rely on a pop-ups, mechanical motors or cases to protect us. We have to rely on an open-source Operating Systems that we can audit. LineageOS allows us to strip away the “always-watching” Google and manufacturer services.

The OnePlus 13 is currently the most powerful hardware that still allows this level of freedom.

It stands alone as the only LineageOS device offering a massive 24GB of RAM, ensuring that no matter how heavy the task or local AI model, the phone never flinches. It backs that up with a big battery that actually survives a power user’s day. It restores our ability to interact with the physical world through the IR blaster, and unlike modern “nanny” software, it allows automatic call recording right out of the box.

But more importantly, these aren’t just specs - they are privacy tools. That massive RAM allows us to run services locally, keeping our queries off the cloud. The raw power ensures we can encrypt, filter, and block trackers in real-time without slowing down. We may have lost the mechanical cameras of 2021, but with this hardware and LineageOS, we gain something arguably more important: a device where your data never leaves your hands.

Victor Gîrbu is a reader-supported publication. For generations, the camera has been a bastion of proof. "Seeing is believing," we'd say. But we are now firmly in an era where that is no longer true. The rapid rise of generative AI video means that realistic, entirely fabricated videos can be created with increasing ease. This isn't a distant, sci-fi future; it's happening right now, and it has profound implications for misinformation, propaganda, and even our personal security.

The erosion of trust in visual media is a serious challenge. How can we function as a society if we can't believe video of our leaders? How do we protect ourselves when a loved one could seemingly appear in a video asking for money in an emergency?

This is a reader-supported publication. The brilliant team at Corridor Crew recently released a video, "Can We Teach our Moms to Spot Fake Ai Videos?", that breaks down this challenge beautifully. Using their insights, I've put together this practical guide to help you develop the essential skill of digital discernment.

Your Checklist for Reality: 5 Things to Look For

Think of this as a mental checklist to run through whenever you encounter a video that feels even slightly "off". You can even save this article, so you can open this checklist for when you need it.

1. Check the Upload Date (The 2023 Rule)

This is the simplest and, for now, one of the most effective checks. High-quality generative AI video technology wasn't widely available before 2023. If you see a stunning, seamless video supposedly from 2021 or earlier, your suspicion should be high. It's a simple piece of context that can immediately debunk many fakes.

2. Count the Seconds

Creating AI video is computationally expensive. As a result, most AI-generated clips are incredibly short – often just 5 to 10 seconds long, and almost always consisting of a single, continuous shot without any cuts. If a video is several minutes long with multiple camera angles and edits, it's far more likely to be real. A short, impressive, single-shot clip, however, warrants a closer look.

3. Scrutinize the Fine Details (Text & Teeth)

AI models are incredible mimics, but they struggle with complex, consistent details that we take for granted. Two major giveaways are:

Text: Look at any text in the background – on signs, books, or screens. In an AI video, it will often be a garbled mess of nonsensical characters or misspelled words.

Teeth: This is a fascinating one. AI is notoriously bad at creating realistic teeth. They often appear blurry, oddly uniform, inconsistent from frame to frame, or just generally unnatural. It's a small detail that a human filmmaker would get right, but an AI model often fails.

4. Look for Breaks in Continuity

This is a huge tell. AI video is typically generated shot by shot, without an overarching understanding of the entire scene. This leads to major continuity errors:

Character Continuity: A person's appearance might subtly change. Their shirt color could shift, or their earrings might appear and disappear.

Environment Continuity: Look at the background. An object on a table in one shot might be gone in the next, or the layout of a room might not make logical sense from one angle to another.

Action Continuity: Actions may not flow logically. A person might be reaching for a cup, and in the very next shot, the cup is already in their hand with no connecting movement.

5. Question the Logic

This is where your own common sense is your best tool. AI doesn't understand the world or the laws of physics the way we do. Watch for things that are simply illogical. Do cars drift through each other? Do shadows fall in the wrong direction? Does an object appear from nowhere? As Corridor Crew notes, it's like an optical illusion where the lines don't actually connect in a way that makes sense in three-dimensional space.

The Ultimate Tool: Critical Thinking

These technical tells are incredibly useful, but they have a shelf life. As AI technology improves, it will get better at teeth, text, and continuity.

The single most important tool, which will never become obsolete, is critical thinking. The final, and most crucial, step in verification is to always seek a second source.

See a shocking video of a public figure? Don't share it. Open a new tab and check with multiple, reputable news organizations. If it's real, they will be reporting on it.

Get a panicked video message from a family member asking for money? Hang up and call them back on their known phone number. Verify it directly, or my personal favorite - call a tech-savvy person and ask them to take a look as well. Chances are they’ve seen many more such fakes, and are able to spot them faster, if you’re concerned that time is of importance in that situation.

Developing this habit of healthy skepticism it's a fundamental life skill for every citizen in the 21st century. By learning to spot these fakes, we not only protect ourselves from deception but also contribute to a more resilient and truth-based digital society.

This is a reader-supported publication. privacy, like the desire for perfect anything, while understandable, can often lead to counterproductive outcomes. This pursuit of an unattainable ideal can create significant anxiety. For instance, some individuals described feeling like they had to treat themselves like criminals or secret agents, obsessed with keeping a very low profile both online and in real life, which ultimately led to frustration, conflicts and a decision to abandon many privacy efforts. Spoiler alert: for the majority of people this behavior is not necessary! No kidding!

Privacy fatigue is a completely understandable psychological response to the constant stream of privacy concerns on the internet. Research shows that privacy fatigue has two key dimensions: emotional exhaustion from continuously worrying about privacy issues, and skepticism about whether protective measures actually work. Studies demonstrate that this fatigue can actually become more influential than privacy concerns themselves, ultimately affecting health.

If you feel you have it, then take a break and try to focus a bit on the legal reassurances I’ll present below, as well as the practical, non-extreme steps, that are easy to implement. You're not alone in this fight, and there are powerful systems designed to protect you.

Here’s the thing, for the majority of you out there, the law is often on your side. As a lawyer, I want to bring a dose of reassurance. While the digital landscape can feel like the Wild Wild West, it’s not entirely lawless. Many of the anxieties that fuel privacy fatigue stem from a feeling of powerlessness against giant tech corporations. You might already know this, but consider the European Union example. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a landmark piece of legislation that has sent ripples across the globe, no matter the region, forcing companies to be more transparent and accountable for how they handle our personal data. We've seen the EU actively take on tech giants, levying significant fines and mandating changes to their data practices. This isn't some shadowy conspiracy theory, it's a tangible demonstration that regulatory bodies are working to protect consumer rights. The existence and enforcement of laws like GDPR prove that we're on a path, however challenging, towards a better balance. This isn't just happening in the EU, many countries and regions are adopting or strengthening their own data protection laws.

The images of extreme privacy advocates, like Edward Snowden, living lives of intense operational security – are powerful. What he did was undeniably impactful and came at immense personal risk. HOWEVER, for the majority of us, that level of extreme privacy isn't necessary, and frankly, striving for it can be a direct route to burnout and that very privacy fatigue we're trying to understand.

Before diving down the rabbit hole of every conceivable privacy measure, it's crucial to come back to your personal threat model. Ask yourself, HONESTLY: what are the actual threats I face? Are you an investigative journalist working on sensitive stories in an oppressive regime? Or are you primarily concerned about advertisers tracking your online shopping habits, or perhaps preventing common cybercrime like phishing or identity theft? Personal threat modeling offers a structured and rational alternative to all-or-nothing approaches. It is a process of identifying potential threats to one's digital assets and prioritizing protective measures based on individual circumstances, values, and resources. The core idea is to focus energy and effort on mitigating the most probable threats that are relevant to you, rather than attempting to defend against every hypothetical danger. The aim of personal threat modeling is not to induce fear but to empower, providing a framework for making conscious trade-offs and focus efforts where they are most meaningful.

Not all of us can, or need to, implement every point on the "Extreme Privacy" checklist. Lying to ourselves about the threats we genuinely face leads to adopting unsustainable practices, which we eventually abandon, feeling defeated and guilty. For most people, reclaiming a significant degree of digital privacy doesn't require becoming a cybersecurity expert or living off the grid. It can start with a few key changes:

Your Browser: This is your main window to the internet. Switching to a privacy-respecting browser like Brave (which blocks trackers by default) can make a huge difference. Resources like PrivacyTests.org (which I’ve mentioned before) can help you compare options.

Your Messaging App: How you communicate sensitive information matters. Opting for end-to-end encrypted messengers like Signal ensures that only you and the intended recipient can read your messages. Check out SecureMessagingApps.com for detailed comparisons.

Your Email: Consider using an email provider that prioritizes privacy and encryption, such as Proton Mail. This helps protect the content of your communications from prying eyes.

If you're feeling up to it, tackling your device's Operating System (OS) can be the cherry on top – perhaps exploring Linux or de-Googled versions of Android. But if that feels too daunting, don't let it stop you from implementing the first three. Switching your browser, messaging app, and email provider is already an amazing leap forward in reinforcing your online presence. These steps are manageable, sustainable, and highly effective.

When you're feeling worn down by privacy concerns, remember this: there are people and institutions actively fighting for your rights:

Many dedicated NGOs work tirelessly to advocate for stronger privacy protections, challenge intrusive practices, and provide resources to the public. Organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Access Now, and Privacy International are at the forefront of legal battles, policy advocacy, and public education campaigns globally. In Europe, European Digital Rights (EDRi) plays a role in shaping digital rights policies. These groups are your powerful allies.

Most countries have consumer rights agencies that can advocate on your behalf if a company mishandles your data or violates your rights.

Many governments appoint an Ombudsman specifically tasked with identifying and addressing breaches of citizens' rights, including privacy rights.

And yes, even The Police or other law enforcement agencies are there to help if you're targeted by specific digital crimes like sextortion, online harassment, threats of violence, or financial fraud.

This isn’t legal advise, this is common sense. This isn't to say the system is perfect, but these avenues of recourse exist. The fight for better privacy laws and their enforcement is ongoing, waged by activists, academics, engineers, programmers, lawyers, and policymakers around the world.

So, when you feel that wave of privacy fatigue, take a breath, not everything under the sun is a conspiracy theory. Remember the laws in place, the advocates working for you, and the practical, achievable steps you can take. You don't have to do everything, but doing something is powerful.

I hope you're reading this before your digital privacy journey, or perhaps you could send it to a friend that is only thinking of starting it.

Why I deleted Telegram

As someone living in Eastern Europe, I've seen firsthand how popular Telegram is here.
